Watford Philharmonic 75th Anniversary Open Rehearsals

Watford Philharmonic Society

2009/10 Season

75th Jubilee Season Concert

SATURDAY 13 MARCH 2010, 7.30pm

‘Belshazzar’s Feast’

This concert will be the third of our major concerts in the 2009/2010 season, in which we celebrate seventy five years of performance by the Watford Philharmonic.

Central to the programme will be the 20th Century choral masterpiece ‘Belshazzar’s Feast’ by William Walton.  Other works are the tone poem ‘Tintagel’ by Arnold Bax; Benjamin Britten’s anthem ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’ and the hauntingly beautiful ‘Five Mystical Songs’ by Ralph Vaughan-Williams.

Performing in The Colosseum, Rickmansworth Road, Watford, the choir and orchestra will be conducted by the popular Terry Edwards, with the acclaimed baritone, Andrew Shore, as soloist.

Tickets at £12.50 and £14.00 ( children half-price ) available from WPS Ticket Secretary, tel. 07546 112 321; online at www.watfordphilharmonic.co.uk or on the door on the night of the performance.

Watford Philharmonic Society comprises a large mixed choir with its own orchestra. It performs regularly in the excellent Watford Colosseum, and is currently directed by the renowned Terry Edwards whose musical appointments have included 12 years as Choral Director at Covent Garden. The Phil, celebrating its 75th anniversary in the 2009/10 season, boasts Sir Henry Wood as its founder. Its repertoire covers all the major choral works; concert versions of classical and contemporary opera, and mixed programmes featuring music from the stage and screen.  At least one concert in each season is devoted entirely to orchestral works.  The choir rehearses on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30 pm and the orchestra on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30 pm, both at the Watford Grammar School for Girls.

The choir welcomes all voices without the need to audition and offers 2 Open Rehearsal evenings to give prospective new members a chance to try us out before joining.  To join the orchestra, you will need to be an experienced musician – preferably to Grade 8 level or above. For more information about joining us, and further details about the Society, including our concert programme for the current year, please visit our website at www.watfordphilharmonic.co.uk
